  • Tag Day Coordinator | Herndon High School Band

    < Back Previous Next Tag Day Coordinator Shadow Needed Theresa Puentes, Victor Puentes tagday@herndonband.org Subcommittee Tag Day is the biggest fundraising event for the Pride of Herndon Band. Donations collected on Tag Day are split 50-50 between the student accounts and the band. These proceeds can be used for future expenses such as concert fees and the Spring Trip. To bring in those donations, all HHS band and guard students, dressed in their band or guard uniforms, walk door-to-door in their neighborhoods asking for contributions. The students travel in groups of two or no more than three and hand out the hangers with information about the band and with the concert schedule for the band (hence the name -Tag Day) while asking for contributions. If no one is home, the students will leave a Hanger that has a QR code and instructions for donations. Students can also send contribution requests to relatives and friends. Coordinator Responsibilities include: Ask for an area host and co-host for each area. (beginning of band camp) Get everything ready to go to the printer. Balance number of kids in each area (last week in August) Send everything to the printer. (1 or 2 weeks before area host meeting) Divide handouts/envelops/tags by area and prepare area bags (Reusable bags and binders). Hold area host meeting to distribute handouts, etc. and give instruction to area host. (First Monday of Back to School Week during the evening camp time) Visit area host homes to see how things are going. (as applicable) Count money - Area Chairs come to the Treasurer house and Tag Day Coordinator (s) and arrive at scheduled times to count money together. Area Chairs also bring all the leftover items (water, gatorade, hangers, lawn signs, area binder, etc.) Prepare summary report for the BPA Board. Previous Next

  • Dr. Antares Leask | Herndon High School Band

    < Back Dr. Antares Leask Color Guard Dr. Antares Leask (she/her) has taught in secondary schools for twenty two years, with experience in Texas and Virginia. She teaches English and Education prep classes for Northern Virginia Community College and is a National Board Certified teacher. Dr. Leask was the 2009 Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted for Texas Region XI. Dr. Leask did her undergraduate work in English at the University of Georgia, holds Masters Degrees in Secondary Education and Gifted Education from the University of North Texas, and earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds secondary teaching certificates in both English and Gifted/Talented. She presents in the tech space about using AI for accessibility and also speaks and publishes on popular culture. She has been responsible for the visual programming and direction of DC's Different Drummers, South Lakes, and Briar Woods high schools in Northern Virginia, as well as schools in Texas and Georgia. She has choreographed for multiple other colorguards and has consulted in both programming and visual performance for several marching band programs. In the realm of colorguard performance, Dr. Leask performed with the award-winning Contempo (TX), Allure (TX), Escapade (OH), Ascension (TX), and DC's Different Drummers (DC) winterguards and Sky Ryders (TX) and Cadets of Bergen County (NJ) drum corps. In addition, she did administrative work for Cadets of Bergen County and the Santa Clara Vanguard drum corps, and has frequently volunteered with Winter Guard International. Dr. Leask also served for many years on the executive board of Atlantic Indoor Association North, helping to manage indoor colorguard and drumline competitions across Virginia.   • Ensembles | Herndon High School Band

    Ensembles Select Ensemble Marching Band The Pride of Herndon Marching Band was founded in 1947 and is the oldest band in Fairfax County. The Pride performs at all home Varsity Football games, hosts a competition each September, performs at the Virginia State Assessment, and competes up and down the East coast throughout the fall. READ MORE Color Guard The HHS Color Guard is part of the HHS Marching Band. Color guards or flag corps are teams of performers who perform choreographed dances and routines with various equipment to enhance and interpret the music of a marching band or drum and bugle corps show. READ MORE Indoor Drumline The Herndon Indoor Drumline is our indoor competitive percussion unit. We practice twice weekly throughout the winter and early spring and we will perform at four weekend contests in February and March. READ MORE Jazz Band The Jazz Band is a small ensemble designed to promote the study of jazz literature, emphasizing improvisation and styles of the jazz idiom. Students meet after school once marching season has ended and receive a half credit for course participation. READ MORE Percussion Ensemble Percussion Ensemble meets every other day to rehearse as both an independent small ensemble and as a supplement to the Symphonic Band percussion section.     < Back Previous Next Chaperone Chair Shadow Needed Wendy Cummins chaperone@herndonband.org Board Coordinates chaperone volunteers for all marching band trips and spring trip. Works with Band Director to choose trip activities and deal with special student circumstances. Works closely with Transportation Coordinator to ensure that buses and trucks are available for each trip. Workload shared with Transportation Coordinator. Attends all trips, unless their own child is not performing. Attends all HHSBPA Board Meetings (usually held 1st Monday of each month) Must be comfortable with spreadsheet, powerpoint and word applications.     < Back Indoor Drumline The Herndon Indoor Drumline is our indoor competitive percussion unit. We practice twice weekly throughout the winter and early spring and we will perform at four weekend contests in February and March. We are aiming for a highly competitive battery and front ensemble to show off our skills at competitions and have some fun music to perform. Most tasks can be handled from home. Photography experience at any level is welcome for this position. The time commitment may vary depending on the band's schedule with Fall being the most busiest season.
